Fedora Collections Manager
Fedora out of the box presents several user interfaces to interact with the repository. While some of them allow one to search and navigate through the different collections and objects, there is only one management application and it is intended to be used by systems administrators with high technical skills. Since in the project we are engaging with teachers, students and researchers with different backgrounds, we needed a simple and easy to use application that allows interacting with the repository, enabling to create new collections, visualize them in simple ways and finally manage them.
Since most of the people involved are quite familiar with the use of spreadsheets, in excel or CSV formats, we have developed a web application that creates Fedora collection objects described in spreadsheets by translating these descriptions into the Fedora expected format which is FOXML (Fedora Object XML) and describes Digital Objects that are to be stored in the repository.
This web application is intended to be used in combination with another developed application, the Spreadsheet Builder, described in another section.
Main Features
- Collection Creation. Individual collections can be created and stored in the repository. These collections can be either containers of digital resources or sub-collections belonging to others already created in the repository.
- Collection navigation. The user can navigate through the different collections available in the repository.
- Digital objects and collection creation. The user can either upload standalone spreadsheets, which create collections and add digital resources to them or upload digital objects attached to previously selected collection(s) by using the collection navigator.
- Content upload. The objects described in the spreadsheet can contain digital resources, such as documents, images, audio/video files, attached to them. The application provides content upload functionalities that upload into the repository digital content attached to the descriptions of the objects in the spreadsheet.
